When we aim to use these data in our study, we have to rely on a set of analytical skills facilitated by the exploitation of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). We also have to be aware of changes in our data management workflows, originating in issues concerning data privacy and new data types. Meanwhile, GIS is a collection of tools to visualize, process, and analyze geospatial data. Yet, using GIS can get intimidating since we often have to rely on foreign software solutions to achieve our geospatial data processing goals. The good news is that we can also use the statistical software R as a proper GIS nowadays. Over the last years, the range of supported file formats in R was expanded. Most importantly, it became so much easier to wrangle complex geospatial data.

In this online workshop, participants learned about using R as a GIS and applying some first geospatial methods. Despite the efforts made by the Ministry and research infrastructures, Serbian researchers, regardless of the scientific field or discipline, insufficiently use the data collected by other researchers, which is available through digital archives or repositories.

The concept for the workshop originated from DCS's collaboration with colleagues from the Observatory of Social Innovations and the OPENAir movement in Serbia when it was determined that researchers in Serbia do not utilise available secondary data. Also, the CESSDA Data Catalogue, a resource intended for social science scholars, is similarly underutilised.

The workshop “Use of secondary data within scientific research” primarily aimed to promote CESSDA Data Catalogue (CDC) with other services available in CESSDA Tools & Services portfolio. In addition, it intended to bring together and educate scientists in Serbia on locating and exploiting secondary data from various sources and what to consider while sharing research data.

The workshop opened with an explanation of microdata from international studies like the Community Innovation Survey, European Social Survey, PISA, Labour force survey and others. The workshop continued with practical advice on how to prepare data to be easily discoverable and accessible on the web, as well as ideas on how to locate the data of others, along with an in-depth explanation of FAIR principles. The last part of the workshop presented the CESSDA ERIC as a European consortium for data in the social sciences. Primarily, the CESSDA Agenda was explained with coverage of the main pillars – Trust, Training, Technology and Tools & Services. The main data hub in CESSDA is the Data Catalogue (CDC) which was presented thoroughly. Additionally, the presentation covered other CESSDA services, ELLST (European Language Social Science Thesaurus), CESSDA Vocabulary Service, CESSDA Resource Directory, CESSDA Metadata Validator and European Question Bank.

The event was held in national language (Serbian).
Slides
Presentation
Researchers","Research support at university and research institutes","Research libraries
Data management","Data discovery
secondary data","data reuse","cessda","FAIR","international studies
["Beginner","Intermediate
Social Sciences
["Vávra, Martin","Kleiner, Brian","Voronin, Yevhen","Jurgens, Pascal
New Data Types in Data Management and Archiving workshop focused on the management, archiving and access to new types of data (NDTs), i.e. administrative, transactional and social media data. Using a life-course perspective, it demonstrates why social phenomena such as inequality, health, education, and wellbeing can only be fully understood by following individuals and cohorts over time rather than relying on cross-sectional snapshots. The presentation introduces key types of longitudinal data in Europe, including panel studies, cohort studies, and linked administrative data, and discusses their strengths for analysing trajectories, identifying early divergence, and evaluating policy interventions.

Through a case study on childhood socioeconomic conditions and frailty in older age, the webinar illustrates how early-life disadvantage accumulates across the life course and shapes long-term health outcomes. The session also provides practical guidance on accessing major European longitudinal datasets (e.g. SHARE, GGS, ESS) and on effectively communicating longitudinal findings to different audiences, including policymakers, NGOs, journalists, and educators.
