The full-day workshop is targeted mainly at new employees in data archives; people generally interested in the DAG are welcome as well (October 13th, 9.30 am - 5 pm CET).

The CESSDA Data Archiving Guide ( is a new resource developed by CESSDA and is designed to provide employees at data archives and repositories with an understanding of the work a data archive performs. The information in the DAG was collected by experts from CESSDA social science data archives reflecting the procedures and policies at their local archives. While the context of these archives varies — in size, the underlying technical architecture or in the specific services provided to researchers — the DAG focuses on common ground and is a useful tool for professionals new to data archiving or those who are knowledgeable in one domain and now seek to broaden their expertise.

The full-day workshop is targeted mainly for new employees in data archives; people generally interested in the DAG are welcome as well.

What to expect

You will get to know chapters of the DAG with presentations by the respective authors. For this workshop we will focus specifically on the Chapters Pre-Ingest, Ingest and FAIR with an additional excursion into the glossary to deepen your knowledge in a playful way. During the workshop, you will work in small groups on several occasions and work on hands-on, practical questions and you will get to know practical tools to assess the “fairness” of your institution. Our main goal with the selection of exercises is to show you different approaches and sharpen your understanding of why you use which solutions in your archive as well as give you ideas in what direction possible improvements could go.

You will also have the opportunity to ask questions and give feedback; DAG is still under development and is expected to become a valuable resource for our community in the medium term. Thus, your suggestions and comments are highly appreciated.

Participants are asked to book the full day from 9:30 - 17 CET in their calendar and be willing to participate in interactive group work with other participants.

We are excited to create this versatile workshop for and with you and use this opportunity to have a reciprocal learning experience together.

In one of the exercise sessions for Pre-Ingest and Ingest we will discuss concrete challenges that arise in the daily work in an archive. Thus, we would like to invite you to send us concrete suggestions of such challenges from your archive, so that we may integrate them into the exercises.
