Surveyed or registered? Advice and presentations on survey data collection and the use of administrative databases
Summary
The aim of the workshop is twofold, on the one hand to briefly introduce economists to survey and attitude research, the possibilities of data collection and the possibilities of linking with register databases. On the other hand, it would also give those who have used surveys so far an insight into the trends in the use of administrative databases. For more, go to event info. The event will be held in Hungarian.
Description
Event type: hybrid event
Event Venue: Hungary - 1097, Budapest, Tóth Kálmán street 4. K13-K14 room
The workshop will consist of two parts. In the first half, a session will be organised around each of the two topics, where researchers will be able to learn about the advantages and disadvantages of each method and get advice on specific research questions from an invited speaker on the topic.
1a. Applications, advantages and disadvantages of the survey method:
What types of social research questions can be answered by a survey? What basic mistakes can be made? How can we avoid them? (e.g. clarification of time dimensions in the questions, inconsistencies between sampling units and questions, etc.). How to design a survey, what are its parts and pitfalls. What response rates can be expected for an individual or company survey? What expectations should we have of the company conducting the survey, what should the researcher do and what should we leave to the company? Data management, data protection: in which cases should we seek expert, legal advice?
Presentation 45 min; questions/answers, also related to specific research:45 min
1b. General characteristics of administrative databases, advantages and limitations:
How is a register database constructed? Which elementary units can be the starting point (individuals, households, dwellings, etc.)? Possibilities for completeness analysis, e.g. small number of social groups, diversity of research topics. How to approach the data. Presentation of research themes already implemented
Presentation 45 min; questions/answers, also related to specific research; 45 min
2. Linking possibilities, main methods - Presentation of implemented linkages
Panel discussion, questions/answers; 1 hour
In the second part of the workshop, we will give a joint presentation on the possibilities of combining the two types of data through concrete examples.
