Summary

The workshop will explore various dimensions of trust, including personal and institutional trust, through a combination of theoretical insights and hands-on SPSS data analysis using European Social Survey data. Participants will analyse trust levels across different countries and age groups, with a particular focus on young people. By examining patterns in social trust, political trust, and interpersonal trust, they will gain a comprehensive understanding of trust dynamics and the factors shaping them in different societies.

Workshop: Exploring social trust: Analysing cross-country and generational trends

In addition to deepening their knowledge of social trust trends, participants will enhance their skills in using SPSS for data analysis, and applying it to real-world datasets. The session will conclude with an engaging discussion, fostering critical thinking as participants share insights, challenge assumptions, and broaden their perspectives on trust and its role in social cohesion and governance.

About the speakers

Samo Uhan is a Slovenian sociologist and academic, known for his contributions to social research methodology, public opinion studies, and citizenship issues. He is a professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ljubljana, where he also leads the Department of Theoretical Sociology. Uhan is associated with the Public Opinion and Mass Communication Research Centre at the university. His research interests span a range of topics, including social trust, values, security, and the dynamics of citizenship. Uhan has authored several important publications, which focus on the impact of context in public opinion research, global citizenship, and qualitative methodology. 

Živa Broder is a Senior Administrative Officer at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. She is involved with the Public Opinion and Mass Communication Research Centre at the university. Broder has a strong academic background, having completed a master’s thesis on the trade union movement in Slovenia from independence to the present. Her work often intersects with social research, particularly in the context of public opinion and social dynamics in Slovenia.
