I4NG CRONOS-3 panel survey: from concept to results

This webinar will present the development of the CRONOS-3 self-completion panel survey, implemented in 11 countries as part of the Infra4NextGen project.

The session will begin with a brief history of CRONOS panel, and the rationale behind CRONOS-3, from its initial concept to its first outcomes. Work on developing questions to be included on the panel began by constructing an inventory of questions already fielded by major cross-national social surveys in Europe. This inventory helped identify questions relevant to NextGenerationEU policy priorities, and highlighted gaps in the existing data.
Many CRONOS-3 items were then designed specifically to address these gaps to support evidence-based policymaking on the five themes of the project: Make it… Digital, Equal, Green, Healthy, and Strong. Participants in this webinar will be introduced to CRONOS-3 survey data, covering urgent issues such as AI, climate change, discrimination, education, employment, healthcare access, inequality, social media use, and wellbeing.
The webinar will then provide an overview of the CRONOS panel design, including sampling, recruitment, data collection procedures, weighting strategies, and key methodological considerations. The session will also explore how CRONOS data can be linked to the same respondent who answered more than 200 other questions in the main European Social Survey.
In addition, participants will be introduced to a built-in analysis tool that enables rapid univariate and bivariate exploration, allowing researchers to quickly test ideas and generate insights. The webinar will conclude with a demonstration of key findings from the 450 questions asked in CRONOS-3.

After completing this webinar, participants will:
- Understand the rationale and development process of the CRONOS-3 self-completion panel, including how evidence gaps identified through the survey inventory informed questionnaire design and content development.
- Know key methodological features of CRONOS-3, including sampling, weighting, data collection procedures, and outcomes related to the 5 waves of data collection for the project.
- Understand how CRONOS-3 data can be linked to its parent survey, the European Social Survey (ESS), and how to use of the built-in analysis tool for rapid exploration of survey results.

About the speakers
Dr. David Consolazio is Assistant Professor at the Department of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Milan. Within the Infra4NextGen project, he works mainly on the Make it Digital and Make it Healthy pillars. David’s research interests lie at the intersection of sociology, epidemiology, and urban studies, focusing on the interplay of individual and contextual-level factors in shaping health and social outcomes, with particular attention on the social determinants of health and residential segregation phenomena.
Dr. Yuliya Kazakova is a research fellow for GGP based at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI KNAW). Her work centres on the Make it Equal and Make it Strong pillars in the Infra4NextGen project. Yuliya’s research interests lie in the field of health economics together with the evaluation of public policies with a particular focus on childhood health, childhood poverty and maternal employment.
Loren Ma has been a Research Assistant at the European Social Survey based at City St George’s University of London since March 2024 having completed a Master’s in Political Sociology at the London School of Economics (LSE). Her work primarily focuses on the CRONOS panel, where she contributes to questionnaire design, management of the panel and coordination of the national teams. Loren previously worked as a Research Assistant at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
