Wed 22 Nov 2023

The Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) is the Dutch infrastructure for research data, including Social Science and Humanities (SSH) Data, and is a CESSDA service provider. The Netherlands is a member of CESSDA. Hear from Ingrid Dillo, Deputy Director of DANS.

The CESSDA Country Spotlight series showcases national service providers. We interviewed representatives of the national service providers, dear members of the CESSDA community. We asked them about the value CESSDA provides their data archive and vice versa.

The Data Archiving and Networked Services

DANS is the Dutch national centre of expertise and repository for research data. It is one of the leading repositories in Europe, with a collection of more than 200,000 datasets and a staff of 60. The organisation encourages researchers to make their digital research data and related outputs Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable, in line with the FAIR principles.

DANS offers data archiving services to the scientific community. Researchers have the option to deposit their data in domain-specific certified Data Stations. For institutes, DANS provides DataverseNL, a service that allows the creation of individual repositories for storing, registering, and sharing research data online, both during the research process and after its completion. All data are stored for long-term preservation in DANS's Vault.

In addition to its archiving services, DANS is actively involved in (inter)national projects, networks, and research to contribute to the ongoing innovation of global scientific data infrastructure. The organisation operates under the principle of being "Open if possible, protected if needed" and is an institute of the Dutch Academy KNAW and funding organisation NWO.

DANS also offers training support, often in collaboration with RDNL Essentials 4 Data Support and CESSDA Data Management Expert Guide. It participates in numerous European projects and is involved in the training and trainer community activities. Workshops and webinars are regularly organised, focusin
