New online training on survey data harmonisation
Tue 12 May 2026

An interactive training course on how to create and work with ex-post harmonised survey data, produced as part of the Infra4NextGen project, is now available.

This online course introduces ex-post survey data harmonisation in cross-national research and guides participants through the tools and methods needed to apply harmonisation techniques in their own work.

  • Section 1 introduces the three components of the NextGen Harmonised Data Gateway.
  • Section 2 covers the theoretical foundations of survey data harmonisation, including how to assess whether variables are truly comparable and which strategies can be used to harmonise response scales.
  • Section 3 provides hands-on guidance for working with the I4NG harmonised datasets in R. It comes with an R file for the user to reproduce the section in their own R environment.
  • Section 4 explains how to assess the quality of harmonised measures.
  • Section 5 guides users through creating their own harmonised dataset, introducing three possible pathways depending on their research goals.

Users of this training course are advised that no prior knowledge of harmonisation strategies is required to participate. Basic familiarity with survey research and statistical concepts is helpful.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to navigate the NextGen Harmonised Data Gateway, work with I4NG harmonised datasets, apply harmonisation strategies, evaluate the quality of harmonised measures, and begin building their own harmonised datasets.

The course is accompanied by live office hours sessions and open public consultation slots. A kick-off meeting for the course is planned for the 9th of June 2026, followed by another session on 29 September 2026. Details and registration links are available on this page and within the course.
