Coming to Bergen for the CESSDA 50 conference? Here are a few things to keep in mind!
In two weeks’ time, CESSDA will celebrate its 50th anniversary in Bergen, Norway. If you’re travelling to take part in the conference, here are a few things to know about Bergen before you arrive.
Bring an umbrella
Bergen is widely considered the rainiest city in Europe. While the surrounding seven mountains make for great scenic views and hikes, they also trap moisture from the North Sea, and the city experiences an average of around 240 rainy days per year. June is usually the sunniest month of the year, but this summer is looking a bit grey.

Bring your sneakers
From scenic routes along the ridges to physical challenges up steep slopes, the seven mountains are criss-crossed with over 750 kilometres of hiking trails. No matter your experience or fitness level, there will be a path that’s just right for you. Or, if you just want to enjoy the view without the hassle, take the funicular up Mount Fløyen or the cable car up Ulriken.

The Funicular will take you from the base to the top of Mount Fløyen in just a few minutes.
Bring your appetite
From sports bars serving burgers and finger food to historic restaurants combining tradition and innovation, Bergen city centre is full of unique and unforgettable dining experiences. Whether you’re in the mood for Norwegian, Mediterranean, Japanese, African, American, or food from any other corner of the world, you’re likely to find something within walking distance of the conference venues.

The historic Bryggen is home to many famous restaurants and bars.
Meet the locals
The stereotype about Norwegians, and our fellow Nordics, being standoffish does not really apply to the average Bergenser. The people of Bergen are friendly, jovial, and helpful, so if you find yourself lost or curious about your surroundings, simply ask a local. They will be happy to help.

Public transportation
Getting from the airport to the city centre is very easy: you can either take the city tram, Bybanen, which leaves every few minutes, with tickets available at the platform, or take the more direct Flybuss route: www.flybussen.no/en.
Once you’re in the city centre, you’ll find that, while Bergen is the second-largest city in Norway, most of its attractions are within walking distance of one another. The city also has an extensive bus network that will take you wherever you want or need to go. With the Skyss app, you can buy tickets for an hour, a day, or a week, depending on how long you’re staying. The same ticket can be used on both Bybanen and the buses.
