Spotlight on the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
Tue 28 Nov 2023

ISSK-BAS (Institute for the Study of Societies and Knowledge at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences) is the national collector and provider of social survey research data collected by Bulgarian research and scientific institutions in the social sciences and humanities. Hear from Radostina Angelova, ISSK-BAS.

The CESSDA Country Spotlight series showcases national service providers. We interviewed representatives of the national service providers, dear members of the CESSDA community. We asked them about the value CESSDA provides their data archive and vice versa.

The Institute for the Study of Societies and Knowledge

Founded in 2010, ISSK-BAS combines the research expertise of prominent institutions such as the Institute of Sociology, the Institute for Philosophical Research, and the Centre for Science Studies and History of Science. As Bulgaria's primary national research centre in the field of social sciences, ISSK-BAS conducts both fundamental and applied research on knowledge, values, and human society.

With an emphasis on social surveys conducted since 2000, the data service is compiling a comprehensive collection of research data. ISSK-BAS will prioritise surveys conducted in sociology, political science, education, economics, and psychology, encompassing vital aspects of contemporary Bulgarian society.

Recognising the value of both qualitative and quantitative research methods, ISSK-BAS aims to provide access to a wide range of data types. By embracing this inclusive approach, the national data service seeks to facilitate diverse research opportunities and maximise the practical applicability of the collected information.

The partnership with CESSDA marks an important milestone for Bulgaria's research community, enhancing data sharing, collaboration, and knowledge exchange on a national and international level. Through its participation in the CESSDA network, ISSK-BAS will contribute to advancing social sciences research and fostering data-driven insights that address key societal challenges.

Radostina Angelova about CESSDA

“It will be very useful if we can accelerate and motivate the international connections and networking of Bulgarian scientists. It is very important to open our scientific community and to give opportunities for joint work and scientific exchange with other countries.” Radostina Angelova, ISSK-BAS.
